Hawking: Mankind has 1,000 years to escape Earth

"We must continue to go into space for humanity. If you understand how the universe operates, you control it in a way,"Professor Hawking said, adding that "we won't survive another 1,000 years without escaping our fragile planet."

Hawking says he is an optimist, but his outlook for the future of man's existence is fairly bleak. In the recent past, humankind's survival has been nothing short of "a question of touch and go" he says, citing the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1963 as just one example of how man has narrowly escaped extinction. According to the Federation of American Scientists there are still about 22,600 stockpiled nuclear weapons scattered around the planet, 7,770 of which are still operational. In light of the inability of nuclear states to commit to a global nuclear non-proliferation treaty, the threat of a nuclear holocaust has not subsided."Life on Earth will have disappeared long before 7.6 billion years," says Smith, "Scientists have shown that the Sun's slow expansion will cause the temperature at the surface of the Earth to rise. Oceans will evaporate, and the atmosphere will become laden with water vapor, which (like carbon dioxide) is a very effective greenhouse gas. Eventually, the oceans will boil dry and the water vapor will escape into space. In a billion years from now the Earth will be a very hot, dry and uninhabitable ball."
According to renowned physicist Stephen Hawking, humanity will only be able to survive on earth for about 1,000 more years.
“We must continue to go into space for humanity,” Hawking said at a medical conference in Los Angeles yesterday. “We won’t survive another 1,000 years without escaping our fragile planet,” he added.Experts estimate that the earth’s sustainable human population is around 2 billion people. Humanity currently consumes resources at a rate 50% faster than the earth can produce them. That is to say that in a 12-month period, humanity consumes an amount of resources that it took the earth 18 months to produce. This unsustainable level of consumption will only increase as the world’s population continues to rise.In addition to yesterday’s comments, Hawking has called for a new era of human exploration in recent years. He likens space exploration today to European voyages to the America’s 500 years ago.
“Spreading out into space will have an even greater effect. It will completely change the future of the human race and maybe determine whether we have any future at all,” Hawking said. But, any future in space hinges on present research from earth, and space exploration budgets have been cut in recent years due to economic woes. NASA’s planetary science budget, seen as a crucial program for finding habitable planets in space, was reduced by over $300 million this year.Sooner or later, mankind will be forced to leave planet Earth - many scientists from different countries of the world share this idea. Reasons for that are plentiful: all kinds of disasters, world wars, etc. The colonization of space seems to be a way out of this situation. Will mankind be able to live on other planets?
People need to escape from the Earth
"Mankind will not be able to live a thousand years, if it doesn't find other planets as a new place of residence," famous British astrophysicist Stephen Hawking believes. The 71-year-old scientist urges mankind to actively explore space to survive. Professor Hawking, who has been in a wheelchair since being diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease 50 years ago, also toured a stem cell laboratory focused on trying to slow the progression of the illness.
Professor Hawking is famous for bringing his concepts to the masses through his best-selling books, including A Brief History Of Time.He has spent his career decoding the universe, constructing theory and research on black holes and the origin of matter. He also reiterated his belief at the conference in why humanity exists, referring to M-theory, a unifying physics and mathematics theory which includes the suggestion that there are higher dimensions in space-time.‘To understand the universe at the deepest level, we have to understand why is there something rather than nothing,’ he said.‘If you understand how the universe operates, you control it in a way.’
